System To Prevent Duplicate Number Plates – Indianapolis
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – The Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles is dropping its practice of issuing duplicate license plate numbers for different types of vehicles.
Agency spokesman Dennis Rosebrough says the BMV will make the switch to the non duplicate numbers by the end of this year.
The Indianapolis Star reports that previously the same numbers could appear on plates issued for a car, a pickup truck and a motorcycle.
Police officers in Indiana have known to record the type of plate along with the number when issuing a ticket, but Rosebrough says the duplicate numbers have caused problems with other states.
