The registration number, AB11 DHB, was originally bought for about £400 (Dh2,300) and could now possibly fetch more than Dh1.7 million, according to MIK Legal Consulting, the Dubai company handling the auction.

M I Khan, head of the company, said he was “not surprised” at how the sale was going. “Abu Dhabi motoring enthusiasts are the most passionate in the world,” he said.

He said the reserve price of £25,000 was crossed within a few hours.

He dispelled suggestions Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed, the Minister of Presidential Affairs and Deputy Prime Minister, was among the seven bidders, saying only the bidders were “private enthusiasts” with “some big names involved”.

“There is a little bit of speculation that two of the current bidders are trying to purchase this plate with the plan to gift it to his highness,” he said.

The RTA already auctions off a range of distinctive numbers, such as ‘K111’ or ‘K20’, raising millions of dirhams a year.

However, Ahmed Hashim Bahrozyan, CEO of the Licensing Agency at the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), told 7DAYS they are now considering a system where people could choose the letters and numbers they want. He said interest in personalised number plates has grown in recent years and the agency was now looking at various options to satisfy that demand. “We are studying the possibility of introd­ucing some form of personalisation for plates that will conform with the existing licensing system,” Bahrozyan said.

Such sales, which take place several times a year, raise about Dhs70 million annually. Bahrozyan said originally it was mainly Emiratis who favoured the plates but interest from the expat community is on the rise. He added that many of them are now looking for a greater form of personal­isation similar to systems in other countries.

Dubai-based businessman Aqela Sayed bought the E-15 number plate for Dhs3.12 million a few months ago.  He welcomed the idea of ordering personalised plates and said owning special plates was popular within the Emirati community. “It is a good idea to allow people to choose what they wish to print on their number plates,” said Sayed.

“This will open up more options for number plate buyers and also people who want their cars to be unique.” Bahrozyan said the logistics of introducing new registrations were still being worked out but it would likely be done in phases and the text on the registrations would be restricted, taking into consideration cultural and religious sensitivities.

Patna Senior SP (SSP) Alok Kumar said that it had been found that two-wheelers, three-wheelers and four- wheelers were using ‘stylish’ number plates, which is a gross violation of the provisions of Motor Vehicle Act. Some people even write police, press and advocate on the number plates of their vehicles, which is also a violation of the Act.

The SSP said it has also been found that some number plates were written in a slanting and shining way while some had number plates resembling the shape of blades, which is also gross violation of the Motor Vehicle Act. The vehicle owners should get their number plates changed as per the rules before January 15. If they are caught with wrong number plates after January 15, they would be fined, he added.

In addition to the car’s spotless breakdown record, it also has certain ‘green’ benefits as well, according to Pat Caseley, Brian’s wife.

“The car has never broken down and is still as good as the day it was first made,” she said. “It runs on petrol and does around 30 to 40 miles to the gallon so is more efficient than most of today’s cars.”

After purchasing the car, Brian did some work to trace its history, and found that it originally belonged to an E H Greenly of Herefordshire. He also tracked down a descendent of Greenly’s, David Forbes, and gave him a ride in the vintage car.
